An accessible toilet is defined by the space around the pan rather than by the sign on the door. The layout has to let a wheelchair user get in, close the door, turn, position alongside the pan, transfer across, and reverse the whole sequence. Our protocol records the internal dimensions, the clear transfer space beside the pan and which side it is on, the grab rail arrangement, and the height of the pan and basin. A cubicle passes when it offers a 150 cm turning circle, at least 80 cm of transfer space to one side, both a fixed horizontal rail and a drop-down rail, and a pan seat at roughly 45-48 cm.

Transfer side is the attribute most often left out of published information, and it decides whether a room works for a given person. Someone with one-sided weakness after a stroke, or an amputation, or an asymmetric injury, transfers to one side and cannot simply mirror the manoeuvre. A cubicle with 80 cm of clear space on the left is a good facility for half the people who need it and an unusable one for the other half. Venues that publish a floor plan or a photograph taken from the doorway solve this problem for their visitors almost for free.

Door swing is the other silent failure. An inward-opening door eats the very floor area the room is measured on, and once a wheelchair is inside there is often no room to close it. Accessible cubicles are normally specified to open outwards, or to slide, with a horizontal closing rail on the inside so the door can be pulled shut from a seated position. Weight matters too: a self-closing device strong enough to satisfy a fire strategy can be too strong to pull against from a chair, and we note when a door needs real force.

The phrase “disabled toilet” is where the practical failures cluster, because the label gets attached to rooms that were never measured. A cubicle can carry the blue wheelchair symbol and still have a bin parked in the transfer space, a raised threshold at the door, a drop-down rail that has been unscrewed and not replaced, a basin out of reach from the pan, or an alarm cord tied up out of the way where nobody on the floor could reach it. None of these show up in a booking system. All of them end a visit.

Access to the room itself is worth checking in advance. In the UK and Ireland many accessible toilets are locked and opened with a standard RADAR key held by the user, which keeps the cubicle from being used as a store cupboard but leaves you stuck if you do not carry one. Other countries hold the key at a desk or a till.
