Tactile paving is a ground surface with a raised pattern that can be felt through the soles of the feet or the tip of a long cane, and often seen as a colour contrast by people with low vision. It was invented in Japan by Seiichi Miyake and first installed in Okayama in 1967, spreading through the Japanese rail network and then internationally. The Japanese system, sometimes called tenji blocks, remains the most comprehensively deployed in the world, and most national systems are descendants of it.

The patterns are a small vocabulary and they are not decorative. Round blisters, or truncated domes, mean a hazard is directly ahead and are laid at pedestrian crossings where the kerb has been dropped, warning you that the footway is about to become a road. Corduroy, a set of rounded bars running across your line of travel, means a hazard of a different kind: the top or bottom of a staircase, a level crossing, or the approach to a ramp. Directional or guidance paving uses flat-topped bars running along your direction of travel, and it means follow this line.

Platform edges have their own treatment, because falling onto a track is the hazard the system most needs to prevent. In the UK, offset blister paving marks off-street rail platform edges, while a lozenge pattern is used at on-street light rapid transit platforms. Japanese stations use a dotted warning strip along the edge with directional lines leading to it. The specific shapes differ between countries, but the underlying grammar is consistent: dots and bumps mean stop and attend, bars in your direction of travel mean go this way.

Colour carries information alongside texture. UK guidance uses red blister paving at controlled crossings, meaning those with signals or a push button, and buff or another contrasting colour at uncontrolled crossings where you have to judge the traffic yourself. That distinction is genuinely useful and widely misunderstood by the people specifying the paving, so it is inconsistently applied in practice. Where contrast against the surrounding surface has been lost to wear or to a fashionable grey palette, the visual half of the signal has quietly stopped working.

Maintenance is the recurring failure. Tactile paving works only if it is continuous, in the right place and still proud enough to feel. Worn domes, slabs relaid the wrong way round so guidance bars point across the route instead of along it, and paving that stops at a driveway are all common. Cyclists, street furniture and outdoor café seating parked on a guidance path defeat it entirely.
