Gardens by the Bay opened in 2012 and was laid out with barrier-free routes from the start, which puts it in a different category from retrofitted botanic gardens. Paths through the outdoor gardens are smooth concrete and paving, typically 3 m wide, with gentle grades and no steps on the main circuits. Ramps and lifts were designed into the level changes rather than bolted on, and the result is a site you can cross without route-planning around obstacles.

The two conservatories are handled well. The Cloud Forest, which is essentially a 35 m indoor mountain, has lift access to every level, so the aerial walkways and the upper viewing points are reachable without stairs. The Flower Dome is largely flat, with gentle slopes connecting each planted vista. Both are air-conditioned to around 23-25°C, which makes them a genuine relief as well as an attraction.

Scale is the thing to plan for. The site covers about 101 hectares and the walk from Bayfront MRT to the Flower Dome and on to the Supertree Grove adds up quickly in 32°C heat. The Garden Shuttle between Bayfront Plaza, Active Garden and Flower Dome runs 09:00-21:00 at 20-minute intervals and carries wheelchair users at no charge, with the caregiver paying the standard fare, but it accepts only foldable manual or lightweight powered chairs up to 1.2 × 0.7 × 1.5 m and 200 kg, and staff assistance is needed to board.

What the Gardens do not publish is worth flagging. There is no sensory map, no scheduled quiet session and no designated low-stimulus space, and the OCBC Skyway between two Supertrees is reached by lift but is a narrow suspended walkway that will not suit everyone. Braille and tactile signage exist in places but are not consistent across the site, so confirm specific facilities with staff at The Canopy rather than assuming coverage.

What the measurements mean

The main entrance is step-free. The main door measures 150 cm, which is generous for any wheelchair or mobility scooter. Accessible parking is available on site or immediately adjacent.

The lift cabin is 160 × 200 cm, enough room for a powerchair and a companion together. Its door opening is 110 cm. Internal routes are around 300 cm wide, so two wheelchairs can pass each other.

There is an accessible toilet. Grab bars are fitted. Turning space is about 200 cm, enough for a full turn in most wheelchairs.

Surfaces are paved, which rolls easily. The steepest gradient is around 3%, gentle enough for most users.

The nearest step-free station is Bayfront on the Circle / Downtown line, about 400 m away.
