The palace interior is handled well, if quietly. Schönbrunn states that wheelchair users can visit the state rooms without barriers, with a lift to the first floor and ramps or a lift covering all display areas — but you need to tell the attendant at the turnstile, because the visitor flow is designed around the main staircase. Once upstairs, the enfilade of rooms is level and the floors are hard and smooth, which makes the route itself straightforward.

Practical provision is solid. Three accessible parking bays sit in the forecourt by the main gate, wheelchairs are lent free against an ID deposit at the turnstile for the palace and at the main gate for the park, and a companion is admitted free where the visitor's disability documentation records the need for assistance. Barrier-free toilets are by the ticket desk, in the Children's Museum and on the first floor, though the first-floor one is only reachable with staff help.

The park is the harder half of a Schönbrunn day, and the scale catches people out. The grounds run about 1.2 km from the palace to the Gloriette, and the main allées are compacted gravel — wide and firm in dry weather, heavy after rain, and pushing a manual chair through them is real work. Our estimate for the sustained climb toward the Gloriette is around 9%, and the terrace itself has no step-free route.

Getting there is the easy part. U4 Schönbrunn is step-free and about 350 m from the main gate over level pavement, and U4 Hietzing with tram 60 serves the Hietzing gate on the other side of the grounds. Because the palace timed slots and the single accessible lift interact badly at peak times, an early or late slot is materially more comfortable than a midday one.

What the measurements mean

The main entrance is step-free. The main door measures 130 cm, which is generous for any wheelchair or mobility scooter. Accessible parking is available on site or immediately adjacent.

The lift cabin is 110 × 140 cm, enough room for a powerchair and a companion together. Its door opening is 90 cm. Internal routes are around 300 cm wide, so two wheelchairs can pass each other.

There is an accessible toilet. Grab bars are fitted. Turning space is about 150 cm, enough for a full turn in most wheelchairs.

Surfaces are gravel — hard going for a manual chair and small castors. The steepest gradient reaches about 9% — steep enough to need assistance or a powered chair.

The nearest step-free station is Schönbrunn on the U4 line, about 350 m away.

A companion or carer is admitted free. Assistance animals are welcome. Staff are trained to assist. Seating and rest points are available along the route. Booking ahead is advisable to secure accessible entry.
