Albertina
Innere Stadt, Vienna · Last verified Oct 2026
A barrier-free museum with published measurements: an exterior lift up to a level entrance 190 cm wide, an exhibition lift of 270 by 260 cm and accessible toilets on two levels.
The Albertina stands on a bastion of the former city wall, so the first step is getting up to the entrance. An exterior lift runs from street level to the entrance level, next to an escalator. The entrance itself is level, through a heavy double swinging door that opens outward and gives 190 cm of clear width.
Two lifts work inside. The exhibition lift connects all exhibition areas; its doorways are 150 cm and 130 cm wide and the cabin measures 270 by 260 cm. The cloakroom lift, with a 110 cm doorway and a cabin of 200 by 110 cm, goes down to Level -1, where the free lockers and one of the accessible toilets are.
Some exhibition rooms are on different floor levels and are reached by stair lifts with a capacity of 285 kg. They are operated with a Euro key, which the museum hands out on request, and they should not be used with electric wheelchairs. Standard wheelchairs and walking aids can be borrowed at the main cloakroom instead, free of charge against an ID card.
Accessible toilets are on Level 1, with a 90 cm doorway and a stall of 170 by 150 cm, and on Level -1, with a 90 cm doorway and a stall of 400 by 163 cm. Disabled parking spaces are on Albertinaplatz, along the right-hand side of Gluckgasse and at Lobkowitzplatz 2.
What the measurements mean
The main entrance is step-free. The main door measures 190 cm, which is generous for any wheelchair or mobility scooter. Accessible parking is available on site or immediately adjacent.
The lift cabin is 270 × 260 cm, enough room for a powerchair and a companion together. Its door opening is 130 cm.
There is an accessible toilet.
A companion or carer is admitted free. Assistance animals are welcome.
What to expect
- The main entrance sits on the bastion above street level: take the exterior lift, or the escalator, up from the street.
- Wheelchair users are invited to go to the front of the ticket queue, and the desks are on the same level as the entrance.
- Stair lifts to a few exhibition rooms need a Euro key, which staff provide, and should not be used with electric wheelchairs.

Albertina: common accessibility questions
Is the Albertina wheelchair accessible?
Yes. All public areas can be reached: an exterior lift goes from the street to the level entrance, the exhibition lift (cabin 270 by 260 cm) connects all exhibition areas, and stair lifts cover the rooms on different floor levels. The stair lifts should not be used with electric wheelchairs, so the museum lends standard ones.
How wide is the entrance door at the Albertina?
The main entrance is a double swinging door with a clear width of 190 cm. It is heavy and opens outward.
Where are the accessible toilets in the Albertina?
On Level 1 (doorway 90 cm, stall 170 by 150 cm), reached with the exhibition lift, and on Level -1 (doorway 90 cm, stall 400 by 163 cm), reached with the cloakroom lift.
